We need to see Roland being waxed philosophical by the man in black before he crumbles to dust. We need to see "There are other worlds than these". We need to see Roland's superhuman prowess with a gun. We need to see him drop ketamime to save Jake from a succubus. We need to see his flashbacks with Cortland and his duel with the hawk, and the plot of the cook. We need to see him converse with the Speaking demon and pull a jawbone out of the wall, which helps illustrate his expertise in a post apocalyptic world of psycho-spiritual phantom and mutants. He will stop at nothing to complete his quest, including gunning down every man, woman, and child in a village, or sacrificing someone he loves. Roland is very much an antihero, and this needs to be shown. I highly recommend anyone to read it who hasn't, and you can consider it a standalone book, not because it doesn't naturally progress to the next steps of the story, because it does, but because it's so different from the rest of the series. It's post apocalypse western but more in the vein of fantasy, with grindhouse levels of violence without self-conscious shlock. It's very different from the rest of the series, and has a certain unrestrained freedom of vision that none of the other books have.

When I heard this movie was a weird mix of the first three books, or at least had quite a different arc for Jake, I couldn't bring myself to watch it.įrom my recollection The Gunslinger was written by SK much earlier than when it was published in 1982 and it shows.
I'm not a big fan of the Dark Tower series (shit the bed after book 4), but I love The Gunslinger.
